How to Overcome Despair When You Hit Rock Bottom

daring member of the month Feb 10, 2023

Each month, we select one of our Impact Tribe members to be our “Daring Member of the Month.” This month, excited to introduce you to Self Esteem and Mindset Coach, Winsie "Winstar" Lee. At every single meeting, Winsie brings thought-provoking questions that give us new perspectives on what we’re working on, or any roadblocks we may be facing. We appreciate her curious mind and out-of-the-box thinking.

Today, Winstar and I will be discussing:

  • The breakthrough she had that led her to inner peace and health regardless of circumstances.
  • Specific tools you can use to transform despair and depression to emotional freedom.
  • How building self-esteem and shifting beliefs and perceptions can change your life.

Meet Winstar Lee

Winsie ‘Winstar’ Lee has a BS in Sociology and a BA in Communications and is a certified NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) coach and master practitioner, specializing in self-esteem, belief and mindset. Winstar suffered from low self esteem and depression for close to a decade during her late teens and twenties but recovered within a year after discovering 3 keys that quite literally saved her life!

From her pain, she has found her passion and purpose. She has now embarked on her mission and destiny to be the winning star for her audience and clients, helping ambitious, out-of-the-box free-spirits who feel depressed, stuck, falling behind and trapped by past failures and life’s obstacles as well as expectations, norms and rules by society and family, to step out of their dark hole and gain freedom and faith, peace and power so they can take charge of their lives and live their passion and purpose.

Having gone through the dark night of the soul to the light herself, Winstar can strongly empathize with her clients and lead them through the same journey by diving deep into their psyche to uncover their limiting beliefs, inner blocks and barriers and tap into their soul for powerful breakthroughs!

Q: How did you get started in your business?

Winstar was raised in an intellectually elite circle with high standards to excel academically and through your work. Being raised in Hong Kong, status and prestige is important in her culture. However, while attending a college preparatory school in Connecticut, she learned that it’s also important to embrace her interests and passions, and pursue what’s important to you – for once, she had the space to explore her interests on her own terms.

Before her junior year of high school, Winstar was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome and faced no choice but to leave this new, freeing life behind. She recounts being “ripped away” from everything she loved, and feeling like she fell from Heaven to Hell.

With the rise of social media, Winstar found herself spending time online comparing herself to others, and feeling like she had been left in the dust of life, completely invisible and alone. The onset of depression and self-esteem issues caused Winstar to struggle both socially and academically throughout college.

After graduating college, she did what most of us do… she crafted a resume and began the job search, only to find multiple unfulfilling jobs that left her in deep depression and not living a life that was even close to what she had dreamed for herself. Without much of a career, social life, or love life, Winstar felt lost and found herself flailing trying to find a passion she could stick with, but just failing time and time again.

It was falling down a social media rabbit hole that eventually led her to the online self help and personal development community. She consumed as much content as quickly as she could and soaked it up like a sponge and was able to make important shifts in her life that led to recovering from depression and developing a passion for helping others in a similar place heal themselves too.

Q: Who do you work with, and what’s the biggest challenge you help them overcome?

Today, Winstar helps people with high standards who feel like they are falling behind others, can’t keep up, and feel trapped by society’s norms. She believes that no one should have to live for others approval, or live a life that doesn’t fit who they are and what they want out of life.

Q: What are some of the keys you use that make a difference in your clients’ lives?

Winstar notes that many people are living their lives conditionally – they want external factors to change how they feel on the inside. She recounts a time when she herself wanted to change the entire world, which is an incredibly overwhelming task to take on. Through her personal development journey, one of the main things she discovered was living unconditionally, “from the inside out.”

Rather than living “from the outside in” (i.e., that mentality that tells you you’ll be happier once you have a job you love, move to a new city, make a certain income, have a certain type of partner, have more followers, etc.), Winstar says that we need to stop placing our happiness and self-esteem on external factors.

The most important thing we can do is love ourselves unconditionally.

The things that happen to us are ultimately not important – how we respond to them, and the meaning we assign to them, is the outcome we see. Many people simply react to the things that happen to them, but when we take the time to pause and respond (rather than react), then we are truly in control of our own outcomes. An important reframe is rather than believing things happen to you, believe that things happen for you.

Q: What does “daring” mean to you?

To Winstar, “daring” means getting out of your comfort zone and acting in spite of your fears. We have so many imagined scenarios that cause us fear, but when we step into the discomfort anyway and get out into the unknown, that is daring. Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but instead of moving forward in fear, treat life and circumstance as an adventure to be had!

Daring also means being able to blaze your own trail and go your own way – don’t be afraid to do something that hasn’t been done before and go somewhere no one else has gone! Finding what ultimately fits you perfectly, rather than just adhering to societal norms for the sake of ease and certainty, dare to blaze your own trail and live YOUR life.

Q: What are you most excited about in your business right now?
