5 Business Rules to Break in 2015

5 Business Rules to Break in 2015

While many business rules exist for a reason - because they help you build a successful, client-attracting businesses more effectively and efficiently, below are 5 business rules that I give you permission to break in 2015!

5 Business Rules to Break in 2015:

1. “You Shouldn’t Do Your Own Graphic Design”

One common business rule that you may have heard, is to stick to your expertise and delegate the rest. While I stand by this rule in many instances, if you have an artistic eye and are a little tech savvy, I discovered an easy-to-use online graphic design tool in 2014, called Canva.

Canva is free (except when you use their photos which cost $1 each) and provides thousands of layouts, graphics and designs you can customize to create your own beautiful, professional and “on brand” graphics. Check it out!

2. “Don’t Give Away Your Best Stuff for Free”

I hear this concern come up fairly often among my clients and Daring Divas members. They don’t want to give away their best stuff because they worry that they won’t have anything left to sell. While this is understandable, it shouldn’t be as big of a concern as you may think.

First, let me clarify; DON’T give your one-on-one time away for free, unless it’s during a complimentary Discovery Session. But DO give your absolute BEST content away for free in your free gift, in your newsletter and at your talks and workshops.

This content is often your ideal client’s first impression of you and you want it to be a good one. The better the content, the more likely they will be to take the next step with you. And let’s face it, an ideal client can only get so far with content alone, the big reason why a client hires you is to apply your content to their unique situation, hold them accountable and give them personalized support and attention.

3. “Don’t Start a Business without a Formal Business Plan”

You don’t need one. Ahhh, now isn’t that a relief? You do however, need to build your business on a solid and informed foundation with a clear understanding about the viability of your idea, the pains and desires of your ideal client, and what your “competition” is already doing so you can fill a gap in your industry.

You also need a financial goal and a marketing plan that lays out the steps to reach your financial goal. This can all be accomplished by working with a business coach, like me. But you don’t need a formal business plan for your soloprenuer business.

4. “You Need to Invest in a Fancy Website”

Don’t get overwhelmed by thinking you need a fancy website right away. Down the road, you may want to invest in one, but it’s not necessary at the beginning. All you need to start is a simple 3-page site that includes a home page, about page and services page.

I recommend WordPress because it is a platform that is able to grow with your business. In the future, when you want to add more advanced features, such as affiliate tracking software, WordPress will be able to accommodate that.

The theme I recommend is Divi by Elegant Themes. Divi is a beautiful, low-cost, fully customizable theme that will give your site a professional, high-end look and feel from the beginning.

5. “Social Media Marketing Has to be Overwhelming”

Nope. It actually doesn’t. First, choose only one or two social media platforms where you will grow your presence. Once these platforms are well established, you can add others.

When you know which platforms you will use, create a content marketing plan for the next 6-12 months. If your platform is Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, for example, you will develop 3-5 different types of posts, such as tips, inspirational quotes, resources or questions. For each type of post you’ll brainstorm a list of 53 ideas, then you’ll turn each idea into social media content that is scheduled in advance to post once a week to your profile.

It will feel AMAZING to have your social media content marketing out of the way so you don’t have to worry about it again for 6-12 months! Even with scheduled posts, it’s still important to interact on your social media platforms in real time, but the hassle of coming up with new content everyday will be off your shoulders!
